Roux family papers, 1658-1929.

Correspondence and documents re the family's history in Switzerland, Florida, and Charleston, S.C.; includes genealogical information on the Roux and Dawson families. Early items include a prenuptual agreement, ca. 1711, setting forth terms for marriage of Daniel Roux, a minister in Crissier (Switzerland), to Elizabet DeCrousar; and an "Acte de Bourgeoise," 15 Jan. 1745, which proclaims Jean Daniel Roux and his future descedants to be recognized as burghers of Crissier. Other Swiss documents include a letter of introduction, Sept. 1752, on behalf of Jean Daniel Roux from the Council of 80, a governing body for Swiss municipalities of a certain size: "Lettre de Reception A la Noble Bourgeosie de la ville de Morges [Switzerland] En faveur de Monsieur Jean Daniel Roux, A... Ch..."; "Nous le Banderet et Conseil des Douze et les Six Commis de le part du Conseil des Vint quatre de la Vile de Morges, raisons seavoir partes presentes quetant amplement informes de la bonne Reputation & Conduille de Monsieur Jean Daniel Roux, Chatelain de Chesay, fils de Respectable & Seavant Daniel Roux quand il vivoi Ministre du Saint Evangile & Pasteur Crissier..." [written on parchment; with wax seal in wooden container; 46 x 54 cm (folded to 17 x 23 cm)] Includes commission, 10 Oct. 1789, signed by Gov. Charles Pinckney, appointing Lewis Roux "Captain of Militia of the George Town Company in the Lower Craven County Regiment of Militia"; letter, July 1797, from Thomas Maitland, Commander-in-Chief of the British forces in Santo Domingo, thanking Francis Roux for his military services; commission, 24 June 1798, signed by Maitland, appointing Francis Roux Captain of Dragoons in the Colonial Forces of Santo Domingo. Later correspondence with family members in Switzerland includes discussion of the attraction of emmigrating to America, including letter, 13 July 1850, from Helene DeLessert (in Morges, Switzerland) to cousin Ann Roux (Charleston, S.C.) acknowleding lure of the California gold rush, "The rumours that reach here relative to the Fortunes that are made in California induce our young people to desire to go and enrich themselves." Newspaper clipping, 1862, reports the death of Harry S. Roux, a member of the Hampton Legion during the Civil War; another clipping [1929], celebrates the 90th birthday of Confederate veteran Edwin T. Roux of Florida; other clippings discuss the Dawson family of Orangeburg, S.C.

A number of South Carolina militia units were adopted into the Continental Army. The 1st South Carolina Regiment, organized in 1775, consisted of ten companies. The Regiment was consolidated, although it retained its name, with the 5th Regiment, February 11, 1780 to consist of nine companies.
